Kitchen Rubbish Main Hall Fire Safety General Cleanup

Kitchen
Tea Towels -
Please find a bundle of clean tea towels in the top draw between the two sinks closest to the ovens. If required, there are more tea towels located in a cupboard in the cleaning room. Please leave used tea towels in the red bucket in the cleaning room; we will have these laundered after you have departed from the Lodge.

Ovens-
The right hand side oven is a thermowave oven, and will cook slightly faster and more evenly than the convection oven on the left hand side. Please note that the thermowave oven doors need to closed before the oven will operate. The left oven has a skillet, which is ideal for cooking pancakes and pikelets. Both ovens are designed for heavy-duty use. Be warned; the top oven elements in both ovens are much hotter than you would find in a domestic oven. As a general rule, avoid using the top oven element at all. If you do need to use it, be very careful not to burn your food by turning it up too high.

Toaster -
This machine is capable of producing large quantities of toast very quickly. The toaster has two separate elements – an upper and lower with separate controls for adjusting the heat of each, and a conveyer belt which is speed-adjustable. You may need to experiment a little with the conveyor speed and heat settings to get the result you want, but generally, for white bread toast, turn both top and bottom element dials to 4, and the conveyor speed to around 2.75. For wholemeal bread, the conveyor speed should be slowed down a bit or the heat tuned up on the elements to high. For crumpets, adjust the bottom element to a higher setting than the top one. Please do not use the machine for anything else, such as cheese toasties; these are best done using the oven grill.

Dish Washer -
The dishwasher will do a load of dishes very quickly, and has three cycle speeds; 1 (the quickest), 2 and 3 (the slowest). Lightly soiled dishes may be put through on a faster speed, but for roast meals, fry-ups and meals where eggs, meat or cheese have been used, the best policy is to pre-wash the dishes, stack them into the racks and wash them on cycle 3. Dish washing liquid is automatically dispensed into the machine from a 20L container under the bench. Please follow the dishwasher instructions on the machine.

Can Opener -
Lift the handle up into the vertical position (this pushes the piercing blade out from the bar). Draw the sliding bar up and slide the can into position.  Using some force, slide the bar hard down onto the can top, which will puncture the lid of the can. Now place the handle in the horizontal position.  Turn the handle to open the lid.

Zip Water Heater -
Be aware that the zip is slow and takes around 25 minutes to boil from cold if filled to the mark on the sight glass tube. It will take longer than this if it is filled higher than this mark. Back to top

Rubbish Management System

You are responsible for all rubbish generated by your group. If you do not wish to take your rubbish away with you, please note the following:

Recyclable Materials:

These include collapsed-down cartons, all paper, all rinsed tin and aluminium cans and plastic milk and drink bottles (note; no other types of plastic are accepted at this stage).  Please ensure you rinse all recyclable containers before depositing in the bins. Please use the recyclable bins provided around the Lodge.

Food Scraps:

Please keep all food scraps separate from other rubbish. Food scraps should be deposited in the white 10 litre pale bins which should be lined with the white bin liners provided in the cleaning room.

All Other Rubbish:

All other types of rubbish (packaging, plastic wrap etc) should be deposited in the large black or galvanised iron rubbish bins lined with black bin liners.

Rubbish Handling:

Full rubbish bags must not weigh more than 15 kgs, must be knotted at the top and stored in the rubbish shed. Recyclables should be emptied into the labelled bins provided in the rubbish shed or left in open cartons. Food scrap bags should be stored in the plastic food scrap storage boxes provided in the rubbish shed. Collapsed-down cartons should be stored in the wire-mesh crate outside the kitchen. Replacement rubbish bin liners are kept in the cleaning room.

Rubbish disposal:

If you have sorted and stored your recyclables as outlined above, they will be removed free of charge. If the rubbish shed is locked, please store rubbish outside the kitchen under the veranda. Disposal costs will be charged to your group at the rate of $3.50 per rubbish bag. Recyclables are collected on Tuesday mornings, and general rubbish bag collection is on Wednesday mornings. Collection time is around 8.00 a.m. Back to top

Main Hall -
The television set in the main hall is available for all user groups. Please do not try to re-tune the channel settings on the T.V. and ensure that it is switched off if no one is watching it. There is a VCR player in a separate cupboard in the alcove behind the T.V. that can also be used. Channel 0 on the T.V. has been tuned to the VCR. Instructions for using the VCR are posted on the inside of the cupboard wall.

Meals -
Trestle tables are located in the large box at the Lake end of the hall. There are 16 long tables (2.4 metres) and two short ones. These should be set up for meals on the linoleum floor in the hall.

Toilets -
Toilet rolls are supplied by the Lodge Trust and are located in the cleaning room. If you need to re-fill the toilet roll dispenser, you will need to use the key located on the notice board in the cleaning room (on a red key tag) to open the dispenser.

Fire Safety - Fire Plan and Procedures -
Please ensure that all occupants of the Lodge read the fire evacuation procedures and plans on the main hall notice board and on the walls of the dormitories. Your group should make a list of all people staying in the Lodge (checklist sheets are available from the main hall notice board) and leave this sheet in the blue ice cream container located under the streetlight in the Lodge car park area.

Smoke Detection System -
The Lodge has a comprehensive fire detection system, which operates on 240 volts and on its own independent 9V power supply. If the smoke alarm sounds, the building should be evacuated as outlined in the fire evacuation procedure plan, and the source of the smoke investigated (if it is not obvious where the smoke is coming from and can be done so safely). Burnt toast, oven spills or candles burning have set the alarms going before. If you find that one of these trigger conditions has caused the alarms to activate, stop the smoke at its source and air the building out thoroughly. The alarms will automatically turn off once the building is free of smoke. As smoke from burning toast regularly triggers the hall smoke detector, we have had a timer switch fitted in the cleaning room, which will turn this one detector off for the desired time dialled up on the timer. This will allow groups to air the smoke from the hall without having to endure the piercing noise of the smoke detector alarm call while this task is being carried out. If smoke activates one of the dormitory detectors, the system can only be silenced for five minutes by pressing the clear “hush” button on the triggered detector.

By law, the smoke detection system must be left on at all times. This overriding timer switch allows your group to temporarily switch off the system while smoke from burnt cooking is aired out from the building.

Note: When the smoke detector system is deactivated, the fire doors in the upstairs dormitory hallway will automatically close.

Fire Alarm System -
The fire alarms will sound if someone either breaks the glass and flicks the switch at one of the fire alarm points, or opens the bolted fire system power supply cupboard doors in the cleaning room. At all times, the building should be evacuated and the fire Brigade called on 111. Please note: The Lodge fire warning system is completely independent and does not automatically call the Fire Brigade when activated.

General

Cleaning rags -
There is a green bin containing clean rags in the cleaning room. Once rags have been used, please deposit them in the brown “used rag” bin. The Lodge will launder these once you have departed.

Laundry -
The Lodge does not have laundry facilities available for Lodge users. Washing machines and clothes dryers are available for public use at the Yellow House Backpackers. Their machines cost $3.00 per cycle (You will need to take one $2.00 coin and one $1.00 coin). The Department of Conservation campground at Kerr Bay also has a laundry with a washing machine and clothes dryer, but these are only available during summer. The D.o.C. machines cost $2.00 per cycle (one $2.00 coin).

Dormitories -
The NZ Fire Service has approved the bed layout in the Lodge and the associated dormitory emergency evacuation procedures. It is therefore important not to move the bunks from their present positions under any circumstances. Please leave the beds and mattresses as you found them upon arrival. For safety, you should ensure that the people in your group that have been allocated the top bunks feel comfortable and secure with this prospect. Very small children, elderly people and sleepwalkers are best to use lower bunks.

Drying room -
The drying room is an ideal place for drying out wet gear. Instructions for using the drying room are located on the wall inside the drying room. The thermostat on the wall as you walk in should be set so that the red mark on the dial is lined up with the red mark on the housing. Open the louver window, and set the heater to its “HIGH’ position. Switch the fan on by the window to speed up the drying time (optional)

Telephone Calls -
The cleaning room telephone number is (03) 5211 043 and it is toll barred. A call to Nelson is a local call, but the Lodge Trust is charged 5 cents per minute by Telecom for any local calls made on this phone.  While this cost is generally absorbed by the Trust, we reserve the right to charge user groups for local telephone calls if the phone is used extensively during your stay. A fax can be received at the Lodge, (5211 828) however it will go to the Manager’s Office (occupied by Lodge Trust staff and locked during evenings and weekends) and be forwarded to your group as soon as possible.

There is good cell phone coverage in the St Arnaud area (both Vodophone and Telecom).

Heating - The heating is diesel fired and is pre-set to come on in the morning and in the evening. You can override the heating by turning the heater switch off in the cleaning room (this switch is located beside the notice board in the cleaning room) should it become too warm in the Lodge. If you require the heating to run for longer or more often this can be arranged for an extra heating charge by contacting the Director. Please turn the heating switch off upon your departure. The fireplace in the hall may also be lit on cold days. Fire wood and kindling are kept in the two cupboards either side of the fire place Back to top

Preparation for end of stay clean up -
There are clean up cards in the cleaning room, which provide clear instructions on cleaning the Lodge. School groups should use the green cards and non-school groups should use the pink cards. Vacuum cleaners, brooms and hearth brushes and shovels are located in the bottom dormitory stair well and mops and buckets are located outside the kitchen entranceway. All other cleaning materials are located in the cupboards and shelves of the cleaning room.

Payment for your stay -
Please record the number of adults and children overnighting at the Lodge during your stay. There are spare forms contained in this manual for you to fill out if you did not receive one from us. When completed, please leave the form pinned to the notice board in the cleaning room.

Improvements to the Lodge -
We are always interested in your comments regarding your stay at the Lodge. Please feel free to provide feedback to us on your stay and on any reasonable improvements you think we could make to the Lodge.
